Rising petrol prices have been squeezing Pakistani households for months, and the government finally responded with real relief. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a new fuel subsidy scheme on Sunday, offering a straight Rs100-per-litre discount to millions of motorcycle, rickshaw, and small car users across the country.
Petrol has now climbed to Rs375.82 per litre, with high speed diesel HSD sitting at Rs403.32, following yet another price hike announced just days earlier.
Who Exactly Qualifies for This Relief
The scheme specifically targets Pakistan’s most common everyday vehicles, the ones ordinary working families actually rely on. Motorcycles, rickshaws, and Qingqi vehicles fall under one category, each eligible for the Rs100 discount on up to 20 litres of petrol every month.
Cars are not left out either, provided they fit a specific criterion. Owners of vehicles with engines up to 800cc qualify for the same Rs100-per-litre relief, though their monthly limit is slightly more generous at 30 litres. That translates into real monthly savings, up to Rs2,000 for two and three wheeler owners, and as much as Rs3,000 for small car owners.
Announcing the scheme, PM Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged just how much pressure households have been under lately. “We are launching a special scheme to reduce the burden of rising fuel prices on those using motorcycles, rickshaws, Chingchis and small vehicles,” he said, adding that his government would not “leave the people alone” during these difficult economic conditions.
How the Registration Process Works
Unlike some past relief programs that involved confusing paperwork, this scheme runs almost entirely through SMS. The Ministry of Information Technology laid out a simple three step process anyone with a basic mobile phone can follow.
Step one involves registration. Eligible citizens need to type “REG” followed by their CNIC number, then send that message to 9771. Applicants must also include their vehicle registration number, provincial code, and registration date as part of that same process. Getting these details exactly right matters, since incorrect information could delay or block your access to the subsidy later.
Step two happens after successful registration. Citizens can then request their fuel token simply by sending “TOK” to the same number 9771. This token acts as digital proof of eligibility, something you will need before heading to any petrol pump.
Step three is refreshingly simple. Just show that token at a participating petrol station, and the Rs100-per-litre discount gets applied automatically to your purchase, up to your monthly quota limit. No lengthy forms, no waiting in separate verification lines.
When and Where the Scheme Rolls Out
Rollout is happening in phases rather than all at once nationwide. Islamabad gets first access, with the relief becoming available from the night between Monday and Tuesday. The rest of the country follows just two days later, with the scheme extending to all provinces, along with Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan, from the night between Wednesday and Thursday.
This entire system was built through cooperation between multiple government bodies. According to official statements, the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication worked alongside provincial departments, NADRA, and telecom operators to develop what’s being described as a fully digital, transparent mechanism for distributing the subsidy.
Why This Matters Right Now
Context makes this announcement easier to understand. Fuel prices in Pakistan have been on a genuinely wild ride this year, driven largely by tensions in the Middle East disrupting global oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz. Petrol sat around just Rs266 per litre back in early March, then spiked dramatically to a peak of Rs458.41 by early April, before easing somewhat and climbing again more recently.
For daily commuters relying on motorcycles and small cars, that kind of volatility makes budgeting incredibly difficult. This targeted subsidy would not erase the burden entirely, but for households running tight monthly budgets, saving two or three thousand rupees genuinely makes a difference.
For now, the message from Islamabad is clear. Register through SMS, get your token, and start saving at the pump, provided you are driving one of the vehicle types this scheme was actually designed to help.
