Abhinandan Varthaman is trending again, and for a very different reason this time. Reports suggest he has quietly stepped away from military life. The former fighter pilot has reportedly taken premature retirement from the Indian Air Force.
After nearly 22 years of service, that is not a small decision. And it seems his next move takes him somewhere entirely new.
The Reported Move to Commercial Flying
According to multiple media reports and Indian Broadcaster NDTV, Abhinandan Varthaman officially retired on March 31, 2026. He is said to have joined FLY91 soon after in August this year. FLY91 is a regional airline based in Goa. It currently operates ATR 72-600 aircraft from bases in Goa and Hyderabad.
Reports suggest he is undergoing training at the airline’s Hyderabad base. This would mark his shift from fighter jets to full time commercial aviation. But neither Abhinandan nor FLY91 has officially confirmed this development so far.
Why His Name Became Famous
To understand why this story matters, you have to go back to 2019. That is when Abhinandan Varthaman became a name every Pakistani and Indian instantly recognized. On February 27 that year, tensions between India and Pakistan reached a boiling point. It came just a day after India’s airstrike on a militant camp in Balakot in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
That strike itself followed a deadly attack in Pulwama weeks earlier. Forty-four Indian security personnel had lost their lives in that attack.
Amid the retaliation that followed, Abhinandan found himself in the middle of it. Flying a MiG-21 Bison, he engaged Pakistani fighter jets in aerial combat. Before his own aircraft was hit, Indian military claims that he managed to shot down a Pakistani F-16 during the dogfight. Which both Pakistan and the foreign world media exposed.
Moments later, his own jet was struck. He ejected safely, but landed on the Pakistani side of the border. Pakistani pilots had shot down two Indian aircrafts.
What followed became one of the most tense diplomatic episodes in years. Abhinandan was captured and held in Pakistani custody for nearly 60 hours. A video from that period went viral almost instantly. In it, he could be heard speaking about how well he had been treated. “The officers of the Pakistan Army have looked after me very well,” he said in the recording.
He was also having tea and was holding a cup in his hand while he said that the “tea is fantastic”. Public reaction to the footage was intense, and often turned into memes online. A line about tea in the video became especially famous.
On March 1, 2019, Pakistan released him through the Wagah border crossing. His return sparked celebrations and widespread relief across the country.
Abhinandan Varthaman’s in November 2021, was honored with the Vir Chakra.President by Ram Nath Kovind. It stands as India’s third-highest wartime gallantry award. The official citation praised his conduct both during and after the dogfight.
What This Move Could Mean
If confirmed, this career shift would be a major one. Moving from fighter jets to regional passenger aircraft is a big adjustment. Commercial flying demands a very different skill set and mindset. But for someone with Abhinandan Varthaman’s experience, the transition may prove smoother than expected.
Whatever comes next, Abhinandan’s place in India’s military history feels secure. His actions in 2019 remain carved in public memory, even years later. Now, if these reports hold true a new identity awaits him. Not as a fighter pilot anymore, but as a commercial one.
