Jazz Becomes First Operator to Reach 1,000 5G Sites

Jazz 5G sites have crossed the 1,000 mark, making it the first operator in Pakistan to hit this figure. The milestone lands months ahead of what many analysts expected.

It’s a notable jump. Barely five months ago, Jazz was running pilot 5G on fewer than 200 towers. Now its live network stretches across ten cities, from Islamabad to Gujranwala.

What the Milestone Actually Means

Reaching 1,000 Jazz 5G sites isn’t just a number — it establishes the country’s largest 5G footprint by a clear margin. No rival operator has publicly matched this pace.

  • Ten cities now carry live 5G coverage
  • Expansion added Sialkot and Gujranwala beyond the original eight metros
  • Jazz calls it the fastest 5G rollout in Pakistan’s telecom history

That claim matters because Pakistan’s 5G journey only began in March 2026, following a spectrum auction that raised roughly $507 million.

From 180 to 1,000: The Rollout Timeline

The scale of Jazz’s expansion becomes clearer when laid out chronologically. Each phase built on tested infrastructure rather than a single nationwide switch-on.

Year-end target2,500 sitesDecember 2026

This staged approach let Jazz test capacity in dense urban zones before pushing outward into secondary cities and semi-rural clusters.

The Spectrum Advantage Behind the Speed

Behind every Jazz 5G site sits a spectrum bet few competitors matched. In the recent auction, Jazz secured frequencies across four separate bands rather than the bare minimum.

Its total holdings jumped from 94.4 MHz to 284.4 MHz — nearly tripling capacity. That includes gains across the 700 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2600 MHz, and 3500 MHz bands.

  • 20 MHz added in the 700 MHz band (deep rural coverage)
  • 50 MHz in 2300 MHz and 3500 MHz respectively
  • 70 MHz added in the 2600 MHz band (urban capacity)

That multi-band mix is the technical reason Jazz could scale sites quickly without straining existing 4G capacity.

Market Share Battle: Jazz vs the Ufone-Telenor Giant

The 5G milestone arrives at a tense moment. Jazz’s overall market share slipped to 36.09% in July 2026, down from 36.25% the month before.

Meanwhile, the newly merged Ufone-Telenor entity climbed to 36.03%, closing the gap to just 0.06 percentage points. Zong, in third place, also gained ground during the same period.

  • Jazz: 36.09% market share (July 2026)
  • Ufone-Telenor combined: 36.03%
  • Zong: 26.83%, up from 26.72% in June

In that context, the 5G lead functions as a competitive shield — a technical edge Jazz can point to while its subscriber lead narrows.

Leadership Speaks: The Official Line

Kazim Mujtaba, President of Jazz GSM, framed the milestone as evidence of intent rather than a finish line. His comments tied the rollout speed directly to future service ambitions.

“Reaching 1,000 5G sites at this pace reflects our determination to bring the benefits of 5G to more Pakistanis, faster,” Mujtaba said, adding that capacity and reliability remain the near-term focus.

He also noted that Jazz was the only operator to invest meaningfully across multiple spectrum bands, while others acquired closer to the minimum required to operate.

The Road to 2,500 Sites by Year-End

Jazz has set a public target of 2,500 live 5G sites before 2026 closes. That means roughly matching its current site count again within four months.

Hitting that number would require sustained equipment imports and tower upgrades at a pace few Pakistani operators have previously attempted for any single generation shift.

  • Target: 2,500 sites by December 2026
  • Current pace: 1,000 sites reached in roughly five months
  • Implication: over 300 new sites per month needed to stay on track

Whether that pace holds will likely shape the next phase of Pakistan’s operator rivalry.

What It Means for Everyday Users

For subscribers, more Jazz 5G sites should translate into faster data speeds and better network reliability, particularly in the newly added cities of Sialkot and Gujranwala.

However, device compatibility remains a bottleneck. Earlier reporting noted that iPhone users specifically faced delays, as Apple reviews requests to formally enable 5G access on its devices in Pakistan.
