The Airbus A320 family has become one of the biggest success stories in aviation history. In 2026, this aircraft family crossed a massive milestone of 20,000 total orders. It now stands firmly as the world’s best-selling commercial aircraft family ever built. Airlines, leasing companies, and passengers around the globe continue relying heavily on this popular jet.
A Historic 20,000 Order Milestone
Airbus confirmed in May 2026 that A320 family orders had officially surpassed 20,000 aircraft. This achievement pushed the total order count to an impressive 20,169 units. The milestone arrived more than four decades after Airbus first launched the program.
It was originally designed to challenge Boeing’s dominant 737 narrowbody aircraft. Today the A320 family accounts for more than three-quarters of all Airbus orders ever placed. This proves just how central this single aircraft line has become to Airbus’s business.
The A321 Now Leads The Family
Interestingly the growth story has shifted increasingly toward the larger A321 variant. Around 9,000 cumulative orders exist for the original smaller A320 variants combined.
Meanwhile, the A321 family has now overtaken its smaller sibling with roughly 9,500 orders. The A321neo alone has collected 7,739 orders from airlines worldwide so far.
This makes it the single most popular narrowbody aircraft variant ever produced. Airlines clearly prefer this stretched version for its extra seats and longer range.
Beating Boeing In The Numbers Game
Airbus continues to widen its lead over rival Boeing in the single-aisle market. Boeing’s competing 737 program has accumulated 17,336 total orders as of mid-2026. That leaves Boeing nearly 3,000 orders behind the A320 family’s current total.
Remarkably, Boeing’s 737 program actually launched almost twenty years earlier than the A320. This makes Airbus’s achievement even more significant within the competitive aviation industry. The A320neo family also continues attracting fresh orders from carriers every single month.
Deliveries And Fleet Numbers Right Now
As of mid-2026, Airbus has delivered 12,670 A320 family aircraft to airline customers globally. Around 11,374 of these jets remain actively flying in commercial service today. The family’s backlog alone stood at roughly 7,461 aircraft by the middle of 2026.
That backlog represents more than ten years of continuous production at current output levels. In the first half of 2026, Airbus delivered 271 A320 family jets to customers. These single aisle aircraft made up more than three-quarters of all Airbus deliveries during that period.
Big Recent Orders Keep Rolling In
Major leasing companies and airlines have placed enormous orders throughout 2026. In March, AerCap signed a firm order for 100 additional A320neo family aircraft. This included 23 A320neo jets and 77 larger A321neo aircraft in the same deal.
It became the largest single direct A320 order AerCap has ever placed with Airbus. In July, leasing giant SMBC Aviation ordered another 100 A320neo family aircraft.
Chinese carriers also played a major role in pushing orders past the 20,000 mark. China Southern Airlines alone added 102 additional aircraft during a single busy month.
Production Targets And Ongoing Challenges
Airbus aims to deliver around 870 commercial aircraft in total during 2026. This target would beat the company’s pre-pandemic delivery record of 863 jets from 2019.
Airbus now expects to reach 70 to 75 A320 family jets monthly only by late 2027. The company opened a second A320 family assembly line in Tianjin, China in October 2025. A repurposed former A380 production line in Toulouse is also being converted for A321 output.
Monthly Delivery From 2026
Airbus delivered 81 aircraft in May 2026, its strongest month at that point in the year. June brought an even better result with 89 aircraft delivered to 49 different customers.
This included 73 A320neo family jets, made up of 39 A321neos and 34 A320neos. July saw a slight slowdown, with 67 aircraft delivered including 55 A320neo family jets.
By the end of July, Airbus had delivered 418 aircraft total for the year so far. The company remains ahead of Boeing which had delivered 367 aircraft by the same point.

The A320 family includes several variants: the A318, A319, standard A320, and larger A321. More than 300 airlines around the world currently operate these versatile narrowbody aircraft.
Its modern fly-by-wire cockpit technology was considered revolutionary when first introduced decades ago. Fuel efficiency remains one of the biggest selling points behind the aircraft’s continued popularity.

Airbus’s 2026-2045 Global Market Forecast predicts demand for over 42,000 new aircraft worldwide. Much of that future demand is expected to favor single-aisle jets like the A320 family. For now, the Airbus A320 family firmly holds its crown as aviation’s most successful aircraft program.
