Grand Theft Auto GTA V came out in September 2013 which is one of the most successful, best-selling video games in history. Made by Rockstar Games, it lets the player live a criminal life in a massive fictional world based on Los Angeles and Southern California.
Most games are lucky to stay relevant for a year or two before the next big release pushes them off the trends, both literally and in people’s attention spans. Grand Theft Auto GTA V never really left. Rockstar Games announced GTA 5 after years of secret development in 2013 it was released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
It made more than $1 billion in just 3 days and broke all the global entertainment records. Then later in 2014–2015 a new upgraded version was released for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, introducing a First-Person mode and upgraded graphics.
In 2022, Next-Generation upgrades were made to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S with faster load times and 4K visuals. It has been re-released across three console generations, it is still one of the best-selling entries on modern storefronts more than a decade later, and it has arguably done more to shape what an open-world game is supposed to feel like than almost anything else made in the last twenty years.
Understanding why takes a bit of unpacking, because it is not just only thing Rockstar Games got right, it is a handful of decisions that all happened to line up.
Three Characters and One City
The biggest structural risk Rockstar took with Grand Theft Auto GTA V was splitting the story across three playable characters instead of one. Michael is a retired bank robber trying, and mostly failing, to enjoy a comfortable suburban life he never really wanted.
Franklin is a young repo man looking for a way out of the neighborhood he grew up in. Trevor is, depending on who you ask; either a lovable lunatic or a genuinely terrifying reminder of what the criminal lifestyle actually does to a person over time.
The Grand Theft Auto GTA V game lets you swap between all three at almost any moment, during missions you can swap for shooting as Michael, driving as Franklin, or sniping as Trevor.
The heists in particular are built around switching perspectives mid-mission like one player might be watching from a rooftop while another drives the getaway car, and you can hop between both in real time.

It sounds like it could get messy, but it works, and it gave Rockstar a way to tell three very different stories about the same criminal world without any of them feeling like a side character’s arc.
San Andreas and Los Santos Itself
The setting is a fictional stand-in for Los Angeles and the surrounding area, stretched out into one of the largest and most detailed maps a game had attempted up to that point.
It is not just a city, either the game folds in mountains, a desert, a small town, and open highway between all of it, so the map never feels like it is just revolving out the runtime. What really sells it is how much of it feels lived-in rather than decorative.
Radio stations run their own ongoing jokes and fake ad breaks. Pedestrians react differently depending on what part of the city you’re in. Billboards and shop fronts poke fun at real-world culture without ever taking themselves too seriously.
None of that is strictly necessary to make a functioning game, but it’s the kind of texture that makes a virtual city actually feel like a place rather than a backdrop.
Grand Theft Auto GTA V Changed the Business Entirely
If the single-player campaign had been the whole story, GTA 5 would probably still be remembered fondly, but it likely wouldn’t still be selling millions of copies a year over a decade later.
That is down to Grand Theft Auto GTA V Online, the multiplayer mode Rockstar launched shortly after release and has continued updating ever since. What started as a fairly straightforward online sandbox slowly turned into its own ongoing universe having heists, businesses, nightclubs, an entire criminal economy players can build up over years of play.
It also introduced Rockstar, and the industry more broadly, to just how much money there was in selling virtual currency long after a game’s initial launch. Whatever you think of that model, it’s hard to argue it didn’t work: by some estimates, GTA Online alone brings in more than a million dollars a day even now, well over a decade after launch, largely through players buying in-game cash rather than earning it through play.
The Numbers Are Almost Absurd
- GTA 5 has sold more than 200 million copies worldwide, putting it just behind Minecraft as the best-selling video game of all time.
- It is still moving several million copies a quarter, more than a decade after release, a sales pace most brand-new games would be happy to hit in their first year.
- Combined game sales and GTA Online spending have brought in well over ten billion dollars since launch.
- It reached the billion-dollar revenue mark within its first few days on shelves, a speed that was unheard of for any entertainment product at the time, video games included.
Those numbers are part of why Rockstar has been able to take its time with the next mainline entry rather than rushing it out the door.
Grand Theft Auto GTA V’s revenue essentially gave the studio a financial cushion that most developers never get, and it shows in how deliberately the follow-up has been handled.
A Tone That Still Feels Sharp
Part of what is kept the game feeling current is its writing. Grand Theft Auto GTA V leans hard into its sarcastic corporate culture, celebrity obsession, social media before social media had fully taken over, reality television, the entire concept of self-improvement as a marketable product.
A lot of games that try to be funny end up feeling dated within a couple of years because the jokes are tied to whatever was trending at the time. GTA 5 mostly avoided that trap by aiming at things that do not really go out of style like greed, vanity, and people convincing themselves their bad decisions are actually a lifestyle brand. It is ironic, sometimes uncomfortably so, but it is rarely lazy.
What Happens When GTA 6 Arrives
Rockstar has confirmed a console release for GTA 6 later this year, and expectations for it are huge some analysts believe it could sell tens of millions of copies in its opening week alone.
That is going to be a hard act to follow for GTA 5, but it is worth remembering that GTA 5 itself followed GTA 4, and nobody assumed at the time that it would still be a top-selling game more than twelve years on.
Whether GTA 6 manages the same kind of staying power remains to be seen. What is already clear is that GTA 5 has set a bar for open-world ambition, live-service longevity, and cultural relevance that very few games, in any genre, have come close to matching since.
