US Embassy Ceases Pakistan Operations

US Embassy Ceases Pakistan Operations amid the Iran war where United States is in partnership with Israel to attack the Islamic Republic. Resultantly, Iranian Supreme Leader was killed during the strikes. As of now, the attack continues against Iran entering into the eleventh day. As part of security measures, the US Government has taken stringent steps in the Middle East. It includes announcing evacuation, issuing specific alerts and imposing restrictions for US personnel. At present, the United States is facing troubling response from communities across the Islamic nations owing to perception of attacks on an Islamic country. Thus, the US Government has closed operations in several embassies around the world.

In Pakistan, there was sudden community outrage in Karachi on March 01, 2026. A mob attacked the US Consulate in Karachi in which several people were killed by the US marines. After the attack, the Consulate was temporarily closed and all the consular activities were paused. It had asked all US citizens in Pakistan to register through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to stay updated on restrictions and any country specific details. Moreover, the Embassy announced ceasing operations on March 2.

On March 3, the Embassy announced cancellation of all visa appointments through Friday, March 6. It seems the embassy was waiting for updates on situation to work out the activities in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. On March 6, the Embassy raised the travel advisory to Level 3 asking the US citizens to reconsider travel to Pakistan. It may be noted that Level 4 is the highest level of advisory.

Pakistan and United States enjoy close diplomatic, economic and military ties. Last year, a grand event marked the 249th Independence Day of United States in Pakistan. However, the current events is bringing in the rifts between the two countries. The impact of war in the Middle East is being felt in Pakistan as well.

As situation continues to deteriorate, US Embassy Ceases Pakistan Operations. The US Government has announced an extension in operational pause in consular services in Islamabad. On March 8, the Embassy announced that it is limiting operations in Pakistan. However, it claims that the services are open for US citizens. The statement said, “The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad will continue to serve U.S. citizens requiring routine and emergency services.”

The embassy also announced canceling all visa applications and any consular services in Pakistan until March 13. The statement said: “All immigrant and nonimmigrant visa appointments are cancelled for March 9-13.”

The applicants were informed that they will receive instructions by emails to reschedule their appointment as US Embassy Ceases Pakistan Operations. It may be worth mentioning that the current visa applicant appointment times are available over several months with the current availability in March 2027 for new applicants. Thus, the operational gap will further increase due to the current pause in interviews.

The Embassy made a clear statement: “All consular services at the U.S. Consulates General in Karachi and Lahore remain suspended.” While it has given the dates for the closure for this week. The uncertainty surrounding the Iran war may extend this operational stoppage for some weeks. Thus, it will create a serious setback for regular travelers to the United States. Moreover, it will also affects students enrolling for the August session of 2026 since they are usually applying during these days.

Every year, there are more than 100,000 visa applicants in immigrant and non-immigrant categories from Pakistan. The closure will also affect the business community in Pakistan. Moreover, it will also affect those planning for vacations this summer.
