Israel Kills Nearly Half of Journalists Globally: RSF Report

Israel Kills Nearly Half of Journalists Globally: RSF Report. The global media organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has said in its annual report that almost half of the journalists killed worldwide this year were killed as a result of Israeli actions.

As per the report, Israeli forces killed 29 Palestinian journalists in Gaza, which accounts for 43 percent of the total.

A total of 67 journalists were killed worldwide this year, RSF said, a slight increase from 66 journalists last year. According to the report, Israel proved to be the “greatest threat” to journalists in the 12 months from December 2024 to December 2025.

The deadliest attack during this period was a “double tap” strike on a hospital in southern Gaza on August 25, in which five journalists were killed. Among them were two assistant reporters from international news agencies, Reuters and the Associated Press.

According to RSF, nearly 220 journalists have been killed since the Israeli military offensive on Gaza began in October 2023. This is the third consecutive year that Israel has been named the world’s top “journalist killer.”

Foreign journalists still do not have free access to Gaza, and only limited visits are allowed under the supervision of the Israeli military, which has raised concerns from international media and freedom of expression organizations.

Mexico had its deadliest year in three years in 2025, with nine journalists killed, according to the report. Three journalists were killed in Ukraine, while four were killed in civil war-torn Sudan, making these countries among the deadliest regions in the world.

The report said that while this year’s figures are lower than the 142 journalists killed during the Syrian civil war in 2012, the number is still below the average of 80 deaths per year since 2003.

The arrests of journalists worldwide are also detailed.

According to the report, 121 journalists are imprisoned in China, 48 in Russia, and 47 in Myanmar. As of December 1, 2025, a total of 503 journalists were imprisoned in 47 countries around the world.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reported that over 360 journalists jailed in 2024.
