Trump Announces Mexico to Deploy 10,000 Soldiers to Border in Fentanyl, Migration Agreement

In a significant shift, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a temporary pause on the anticipated tariffs against Mexico after a productive conversation with Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum. The decision comes after the two leaders agreed to a new security initiative aimed at addressing illegal immigration and the flow of fentanyl into the United States.
In a tweet shared with the public, Trump revealed that President Sheinbaum had agreed to send 10,000 Mexican soldiers to secure the border between the two nations. These troops will be focused on preventing the trafficking of fentanyl and curbing the surge of illegal migrants entering the U.S.
“I just spoke with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican soldiers on the border separating Mexico and the United States,” Trump stated in his tweet. “These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our Country.”

As part of the agreement, Trump announced that the previously planned tariffs, which had been set to escalate, would be paused for one month. During this time, negotiations will take place, led by U.S. officials including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, in coordination with high-level representatives from Mexico.
Trump expressed optimism about the upcoming discussions, which will aim to solidify a broader deal between the two countries. “I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum, as we attempt to achieve a ‘deal’ between our two countries,” he said.
