The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman, Major General (Retd) Hafeez ur Rehman, has urged Pakistan to adopt new technologies quickly while protecting citizens’ trust and data. At a recent cybersecurity workshop, he confirmed that the authority is preparing to launch 5G in Pakistan and that satellite internet services will follow soon.
PTA Prepares for 5G Rollout
Hafeez ur Rehman said PTA is working with telecom companies to make 5G services in Pakistan a reality. He pointed out that China has already begun talks about 6G, showing how quickly technology is advancing worldwide.
“Cybersecurity is vital for 5G,” he said, adding that data protection and safe networks will guide Pakistan’s rollout. The new technology will help improve speed, reliability, and business innovation across multiple industries.
Satellite Internet Rules Ready
The PTA chief revealed that rules for the Pakistan Satellite Internet Regulatory Body (PSARB) are complete. With this step, Pakistan is ready to launch satellite internet services soon.
He explained that satellite connectivity will cover rural and remote areas where fiber or towers are not possible. This will allow millions of students, businesses, and professionals in far-off regions to access fast internet.
Cybersecurity and AI Challenges
The chairman also raised concerns about the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI). While AI offers solutions in healthcare, education, and business, it is also being used to create fake audio and video content. Such misuse has led to scams and fraud.
“Stopping financial fraud is a big challenge, and PTA is working hard to control it,” he said. He assured the public: “We are the protectors of your privacy and data.”
Pakistan’s Defense Against Cyber Threats
Dr. Mukaram Khan, Director General Cyber Vigilance at PTA, also spoke at the event. He said Pakistan has defended itself against several Indian cyberattacks, and no major breach has been reported in the telecom sector.
He explained that Pakistan’s telecom industry scored 8.8 out of 10 in global cybersecurity ratings, showing strong progress. PTA also conducts third-party audits of telecom operators to fix weaknesses and improve resilience.
A Digital Future for Pakistan
The combined rollout of 5G in Pakistan and satellite internet will boost the economy and improve social life. Businesses will use faster networks for growth, while citizens will benefit from smart homes, e-learning, telemedicine, and secure digital services.
Hafeez ur Rehman emphasized that Pakistan must move forward with both innovation and responsibility. By focusing on cybersecurity, privacy, and affordable access, PTA aims to build a secure and inclusive digital society.
