Pakistan batsmen Saud Shakeel and Saim Ayub also made significant gains in the rankings.
Root, who has 888 rating points, has overtaken teammate Harry Brook to take the top spot in the rankings.
Harry Brook has moved up to third place while New Zealand’s Kane Williamson is now second.
Australia’s Steve Smith has moved up one place to fourth in the rankings after his brilliant innings of 48 in the third Test against the West Indies in Jamaica.
Meanwhile, Cameron Green has climbed 16 places to 29th in the rankings after scores of 46 and 42 in a low-scoring match against the Windies.
Among the Indians in the top 10, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant have dropped one place each to fifth and eighth in the Test batsmen’s list, respectively.

Amir Jamal has dropped two places to 42nd, while Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah are at 55th and 75th respectively. Mohammad Abbas is at 80th position.
