The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide alert for heavy monsoon rains and potential flooding from June 29 to July 5, warning of possible landslides, flash floods, and urban inundation across multiple regions.
According to the NDMA, widespread heavy downpours are expected in Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Islamabad, Potohar region, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur, Balakot, Murree, and Galiyat, posing risks of landslides and overflowing streams in hilly terrain.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, cities including Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Kohat, Swat, Chitral, Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, and Mardan are likely to face urban flooding.
Rising water levels are also anticipated in the Kabul, Swat, Chitral, and Hunza rivers and their tributaries.
In Punjab, heavy rainfall is forecast in Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Narowal, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Sheikhupura, and Kasur, with warnings of potential flash floods in low-lying areas.
The NDMA also flagged flood risks and landslides in Hazara, Malakand, Azad Kashmir, and the Pir Panjal ranges due to intense rainfall.
Between July 2 and 5, Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, and Badin are expected to receive torrential rain, raising fears of urban flooding in the southern region.
According to the NDMA, there is a possibility of flooding in the rivers and streams of Hazara, Malakand, Azad Kashmir and Pir Panjal and landslides in mountainous areas.
The NDMA warned that strong winds and heavy rainfall could lead to the collapse of weak structures, walls, power poles, and billboards. Reduced visibility during dust storms or thunderstorms may increase the risk of road accidents.
Citizens are advised to avoid crossing flooded streams and rivers, stay away from fragile infrastructure, trees, and power lines.
