False rape accusations now punishable by 3-year in jail in Lahore. In a move to curb the filing of baseless allegations of sexual assault, Lahore authorities have announced that people who file false rape cases will face imprisonment of up to three years under the Prevention of Rape Act.
The city’s investigation wing is currently drafting standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure effective implementation of the law. According to officials, the move is aimed at upholding justice and protecting people from false allegations that can ruin lives.
Police figures reveal a disturbing trend: About 47 percent of sexual assault cases in Lahore this year were declared baseless during investigation. Out of more than 400 cases examined, 70 accused were found innocent. 800 cases are currently under investigation while the rest have been referred to courts.
A key procedural question — whether the complainant in such cases will be the investigating officer or the victim — is under consideration. A police spokesperson stressed that a clarification on the matter is expected soon.
“The implementation of these provisions under the Anti-Rape Act will significantly reduce the prevalence of false allegations, ensuring that justice is delivered,” the spokesperson said.
