Afghanistan decimate South Africa to win series. Afghanistan dominated South Africa once again Friday evening to win the series 2-0.
Afghanistan decimated the South African batting line-up on Wednesday in what was their most high-profile One Day International (ODI) win to date, bowling out the side for 106 runs before easily beating that total in 26 overs. Last night, Afghanistan closed out the series in an even more emphatic win, scoring 311 runs before ending South Africa’s chase at 134.
The 177-run victory began with an outstanding performance from opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who made 105 off 110 deliveries, smashing ten fours and three sixes along the way. His assault continued until he was bowled out by Nandre Burger in the 35th over.
Azmatullah Omarzai and Rahmat Shah were the two other standouts, making 86 runs and 50 runs, respectively. Omarzai only saw 50 balls, in which he hit six sixes and five fours in his blistering onslaught. Shah was able to make his half century in 66 deliveries before being stumped in the 40th over.
South Africa had an intimidating total to chase against a side who had bowled them out with ease in their last outing. However, the ICC 3rd ranked ODI team got off to a good start, staying on par with Afghanistan through the 13th over.
It was in the 14th that Afghanistan took over. After South Africa’s first wicket fell at 73, Afghanistan only gave away 61 more runs before winning the series.
