WhatsApp Solves Group Chat Mystery with THIS New Feature. WhatsApp is rolling out a new update for Android users that enhances the typing indicator feature in group chats, offering greater visibility into ongoing conversations.
According to WABetaInfo, a platform that tracks WhatsApp’s progress, the feature is currently available to select users via Android beta version 2.25.20.17, which can be obtained through the Google Play Store.
Previously, when multiple members in a group chat were typing at the same time, WhatsApp would only display a single name in the chat list, such as “Ali is typing…”. This limits users’ ability to gauge group activity without entering the conversation.
The latest update replaces the single name indicator with a dynamic string that shows the number of people currently typing. For example, users can now see “2 people are typing…” in the chat preview even before opening the group.
The change is being seen as a minor but meaningful improvement in the user experience, especially for highly active group chats where simultaneous replies are common. The feature is expected to help users better gauge the flow of the conversation and manage their engagements accordingly.
“This update adds a layer of transparency and convenience, especially for those managing busy group discussions,” the report says. “It provides users with relevant awareness of ongoing activity.”
However, the updated indicator only applies to text messages. If multiple users are recording voice notes at the same time, WhatsApp will continue to display the name of only one participant, as it did previously.
The feature is being gradually rolled out to a wider group of beta testers and is expected to reach more users in the coming weeks. There is no official word yet on when the feature will be released to all users.
