Yash Is Back: Toxic Movie is in Theatres After a Four-Year Wait
Kannada superstar Yash returned to the big screen this week after a long absence. His new film Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups, opened worldwide on August 26. It marks his first theatrical release since his previous lead film KGF: Chapter 2 back in 2022.
Directed by filmmaker Geetu Mohandas, the film released across six languages simultaneously. Audiences could watch it in Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and English.
A Long and Bumpy Road to Release
Toxic: A Fairy Tale was first announced back in December 2023 under the working title Yash 19. The film represents Yash’s nineteenth outing as a leading actor in cinema.
The makers pushed the release date back four separate times before finalizing it. It was originally slated for March 2026, then moved multiple times afterward. Yash explained the delays by saying the team needed extra time for global distribution deals.
Budget figures for the film vary depending on the source. Some reports place the budget near ₹600 crore, while others cite figures closer to ₹800 crore. This shows that “Toxic” stands among the most expensive films ever produced in India.
Story, Setting, and Star Studded Cast
The film is set against the backdrop of Goa between the 1950s and 1970s. This period marks the gradual weakening of Portuguese colonial rule in the region. Against this backdrop the story follows the rise of a powerful drug cartel and its gangster world.
Yash takes on a demanding dual role for this project, playing both father and son. His characters, named Raya and Ticket sit on opposing sides of the film’s central conflict. The trailer teased intense action sequences spread across multiple time periods and locations.
The cast features impressive leading actresses alongside Yash. Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Huma Qureshi, Tara Sutaria, and Rukmini Vasanth all appear in prominent roles. It seems to be one of the key roles for Kiara after her wedding.
Cinematographer Rajeev Ravi handled the film’s visuals, giving it a distinct period look. Music was composed by a team including Ravi Basrur and Vishal Mishra.
Blockbuster Numbers on Opening Day
This film made a loud entrance at the Indian box office on its first day. The film earned a net collection of over ₹101 crore across the country. Total gross collections in India reportedly touched around ₹120 crore on day one.
More than 24,000 shows were scheduled nationwide to accommodate the massive demand. Around 18 lakh tickets were sold even before official day one numbers were confirmed. The Hindi version alone contributed close to ₹55 crore in net collections.
Advance bookings had already signaled a strong opening well before release day arrived. Hindi 2D shows led ticket sales, crossing ₹23 crore from pre-sales alone.
Trade analysts noted that this film had entered the coveted fifty-crore club on day one itself. Despite mixed reviews, box office momentum remained firmly in the film’s favor.
Critics and Audiences Split Down the Middle
Reactions to this film Toxic have been notably divided since its release hit theatres. Many viewers praised Yash’s screen presence, calling his performance magnetic and commanding. But with appreciation comes criticism and it quickly centered on the film’s pacing, screenplay, and lengthy runtime.
