Revised Water Tax Rates for Larger Consumers in Islamabad.
New Tax on Borehole Water in Islamabad Announced. Residents of Islamabad will now have to pay taxes ranging from 1,000 to 75,000 rupees for water obtained from boreholes.
The Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) has introduced a new method to collect funds.
According to a notification issued by the MCI, various water charges will be levied based on the horsepower of the borehole motor. For instance, households with half horsepower motors and one-inch pipes will be charged 1,000 rupees per month. Commercial consumers will be charged 2,000 rupees per month. For those using two horsepower motors and two-inch pipes, the monthly fee will be 2,500 rupees for households and 4,000 rupees for commercial consumers.
Moreover, households using 8 to 15 horsepower motors and three-inch pipes will pay 10,000 rupees per month, while commercial consumers will pay 15,000 rupees. For those with 15 to 30 horsepower motors and four-inch pipes, households will pay 20,000 rupees and commercial consumers will pay 25,000 rupees monthly.
For larger consumers, such as those with 40 to 50 horsepower motors and six-inch pipes, households will be charged 50,000 rupees and commercial consumers 75,000 rupees per month. Additionally, households with 70 to 100 horsepower motors and eight-inch pipes will pay 100,000 rupees, while commercial consumers will pay 150,000 rupees monthly.

This decision comes as a means to regulate the use of underground water resources and ensure their sustainable management. The funds collected through this taxation will contribute to the maintenance and development of water infrastructure in Islamabad.
