Jennifer Lopez brought her signature Hollywood glamour to the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday for the world premiere of her new film “Unstoppable.” The true-story sports drama received a warm and emotional ovation from the audience.
This marked Lopez’s first red carpet appearance since announcing her divorce from Ben Affleck. Affleck, who co-produced the film with his long-time friend Matt Damon, did not attend the event. But Lopez stood tall on her own, turning heads in a stunning metallic silver gown held together by bold black velvet bows. Her loose, flowing hair and shining platform heels completed the dazzling look.
In “Unstoppable,” Lopez plays Judy, the mother of real-life wrestler Anthony Robles (played by Jharrel Jerome). Robles was born with one leg but refused to let that define him, eventually becoming a college wrestling champion at Arizona State University. The film also stars Don Cheadle, Michael Peña, and Bobby Cannavale, who portray key figures in Robles’s life.
The audience at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall applauded several times during the movie, especially as it built up to Robles’s championship victory. When the credits rolled, the real Anthony Robles, who was present in the theater, received a standing ovation.
Speaking after the screening, Lopez said the story touched her deeply. “When I read the script, I felt that so many women, including myself, could relate to Judy’s struggles,” she shared. “This story, being a Latino story and an inspiring one, really spoke to me.”
Jharrel Jerome also talked about preparing for his role. He trained for five months, even practicing on the mat with Robles himself. “It is one of the hardest things as an actor to portray someone real,” he said.
“Unstoppable” was one of the biggest highlights on the festival’s second day. The event, which is North America’s largest film festival, has returned to full strength after last year’s Hollywood strikes kept many stars away.
