Snowfall security alert issued for Murree, Galiyat following first snow of the season. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a snowfall security alert for the Murree and Galiyat regions after the first snowfall of the season on Sunday. The alert comes as authorities have activated a comprehensive snowfall security plan to ensure the safety of tourists and residents during the ongoing winter weather.
In response to the alert, the Murree administration has operationalized all Sahulat centers to assist visitors, while Civil Defense volunteers have been deployed to secure the routes leading to Murree. A full-dress mock rescue exercise was also conducted to prepare for any emergencies involving tourists.
Irfan Ali, Director General of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), visited Murree to evaluate the security measures in place. He delivered three truckloads of security equipment to the Deputy Commissioner of Murree to bolster the region’s preparedness for the harsh weather conditions.
Rawalpindi Division Commissioner Aamir Rafique has instructed the deployment of additional traffic police personnel to Murree to manage the influx of tourists and maintain order on the roads. Police officers from the Murree police stations, currently assigned to other districts within the Rawalpindi Division, have been encouraged to volunteer for additional duties in Murree during this critical time.
The PMD has also issued a weather warning, forecasting a cold wave that will affect most parts of the country from December 8th to 14th. The cold wave is expected to bring a significant drop in both daytime and nighttime temperatures. In regions like Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir, daytime temperatures may plummet by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius below normal. Meanwhile, Balochistan and Sindh are expected to experience temperature drops of 5 to 7 degrees Celsius, along with cold conditions and gusty winds.
Additionally, light to moderate rain, wind, and thunderstorms, along with snowfall in higher elevations, are forecast for several areas including Murree, Galiyat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, from the night of December 7th to December 11th. These weather conditions are likely to continue with occasional breaks in precipitation.
Authorities are urging tourists to stay informed about the weather conditions and to exercise caution while traveling to snow-prone areas. The snowfall security measures in place are aimed at ensuring the safety of all visitors to Murree and the surrounding hilly regions during this early onset of winter.
