Blasphemy protests turn violent in Quetta as grenade hits Kharotabad Police Station. Law and order situation remains grim in Balochistan capital Quetta, Pakistan as the metropolis saw protests by a right-wing group demanding authorities to handover a suspect accused of blasphemy.
Quetta police held an individual after filing a case against him for blasphemy. The party members reportedly blocked key western bypass by setting fire to tires and moved rallies throughout the city.
Amid demonstrations, the agitators also hurled a grenade at Kharotabad police station, insisting on the suspect’s release. The grenade exploded outside the building, and luckily no cop or citizen got injured.
A senior police official confirmed that a case filed against suspect shortly after the allegations surfaced, leading to his arrest. The casse is related to a local resident of country’s southwestern region who allegedly used derogatory language about the Islamic personalities and his audio tape went viral, sparking widespread outrage and protests.
Protesters set up barricades on the western bypass and rallied in front of the police station, chanting slogans and demanding that the suspect be handed over so they could determine his fate.
The police informed the crowd that FIR was filed under Sections 295C and 34 of the penal code and that an investigation was in progress. Later, senior police officials managed to clear the area and reopen the western bypass after talks.
