Punjab Zakat Department to Assist in Releasing Prisoners Unable to Pay Fines. The Punjab Zakat Department has introduced a new project aimed at addressing the needs of prisoners who have completed their time but remain inside because of the fine they could not pay.
An amount of Rs50 million has been assigned to the pilot project aimed at the release of thousands of prisoners who had served from 5 to 10 years but could not pay the fine.
Apart from this, the department has also raised the monthly Zakat allowance for families living below the poverty line from Rs1,500 to Rs2,000. Moreover, the marriage grant has been increased from Rs25,000 to Rs0.1 million.
Besides, after a 13-month suspension, financial assistance to over 0.3 million Zakat beneficiary families across the province will be resumed as an Eid gift before Eidul Fitr.
For this purpose, the government is being requested to release the Zakat deductions recovered from banks during the month of Ramadan. The Zakat Department has written to the inspector general-prisons requesting a detailed list of the eligible inmates, and these inmates will be released by paying their fines a week before Eidul Fitr.
