Millions of Pakistanis Exercise Democratic Right Amidst Challenges in Historic Elections
Election 2024 Result: Latest Party Position. The counting of ballots is currently underway following a historic voter turnout in Pakistan’s general elections 2024. Despite facing nationwide internet and mobile shutdowns, sporadic political violence, and a deadly terror attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, millions of citizens exercised their democratic right on Thursday.
Out of the 128 million eligible voters, a significant portion turned out to elect their representatives across 265 National Assembly, 296 Punjab Assembly, 130 Sindh Assembly, 113 Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and 51 Balochistan seats, totaling 855 seats. This election marked the largest-ever in the country’s history and holds immense significance for Pakistan’s uncertain socioeconomic and political future amidst challenging economic and security conditions.
The run-up to the polls was marred by violence, particularly with a surge in terrorist attacks in Balochistan and KP. Despite this, the polling day itself remained relatively calm, with no major violent incidents reported across the country apart from a tragic terrorist attack on police in Dera Ismail Khan (DI) that resulted in the loss of four officers.
However, controversy arose over the government’s last-minute decision to suspend mobile and internet services nationwide, casting doubts on the transparency, fairness, and freedom of the polls. This move drew criticism from various political figures, including PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, JIP Emir Hafiz Naeem Ur Rehman, and independent candidate Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, who questioned the government’s actions.
