Polio teams targeted in Karak & Bannu: Policeman martyred. A policeman was martyred and a polio worker was injured in an attack by unknown assailants on a polio team in Banda Daud Shah tehsil of Karak district, here on Monday.

As per the details, the incident took place in Shakar Khel area of ​​Teri police station where unidentified motorcyclists opened fire on the team during an anti-polio campaign.

According to DIG Kohat, the martyred policeman was identified as Irfan, who was on duty to provide security to the polio team. He succumbed to his injuries on the spot, while the injured polio worker was taken to Peshawar for treatment.

Rescue personnel shifted the body of the policeman to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) for post-mortem. After the attack, police cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to arrest the accused.

Karak Deputy Commissioner Shakeel Marwat confirmed that despite the incident, the polio campaign is continuing across the district. The aim of the campaign is to protect children under the age of five from the crippling disease.

Meanwhile, in neighbouring Bannu, a polio worker, identified as Hayatullah, was injured when unidentified assailants opened fire on him inside the Sadar police station limits. The injured have been shifted to a hospital, police said, adding that the official had an old enmity with Hayatullah and his family.

The armed assailants fled the scene, police claimed, as a five-day anti-polio campaign began in the district on Monday amid tight security. Over 2,500 police personnel were deployed to ensure the peaceful conduct of the ongoing campaign.

The deputy commissioner has imposed Section 144 across the district for seven days in connection with the anti-polio campaign, banning pillion riding on motorcycles, displaying weapons and using tinted windows in vehicles.
