Inter Miami Falls Against Toronto FC
Inter Miami suffered a painful home defeat on August 24, Saturday night in the Nu Stadium. There were total three goals made including both sides. The final score read 2-1 in favor of Toronto FC.
This result marked a major upset in Major League Soccer. Inter Miami entered the match sitting second in the Eastern Conference while Toronto occupied a lowly spot near the bottom of the table. Few people expected the Canadian club to walk away victorious.
The First Half
Both teams played cautiously during the opening forty-five minutes. Chances were rare, and neither side found a real breakthrough. Luis Suarez had the best opportunity for Inter Miami early on. He found space on the edge of the box in the nineteenth minute. His shot though sailed wide of the target.
The match also brought an early scare for the home side. Defender Gonzalo Lujan left the field with an apparent injury. He departed in the twenty-sixth minute, forcing an early defensive reshuffle. But despite the concern the score stayed level at nil-nil going into the break.
Toronto Strikes Twice in a Flash
The second half started slowly just like the first. Then everything changed within the space of a few minutes. Sergio Reguilon another Miami defender exited the match with a possible injury in the fifty-eighth minute. Noah Allen came on to fill the gap at the back.
That substitution seemed to unsettle Inter Miami’s defensive shape. Just a minute later Toronto FC removed the confusion. A passing sequence ended with Josh Sargent finding the net. His left-footed strike from the edge of the box gave Toronto a shock lead.
Toronto FC was not finished there. Only three minutes after Sargent’s goal, Toronto doubled their advantage. A cross intended for Daniel Salloi got deflected in the box. Derrick Etienne Jr. reacted quickest and slotted home the loose ball. And right after this goal, Toronto led by 2-0 and the home crowd fell silent.
Messi Gave a Glimpse of Hope
Inter Miami tried to respond immediately after falling behind. Coach Guillermo Hoyos made a triple substitution in the seventy-fourth minute. Fresh players came on in search of an equalizer. The changes injected new energy into Inter Miami’s attack down the stretch.
With eight minutes left on the clock, the comeback gained momentum. Rodrigo De Paul pulled a move and got the ball through the Toronto defense. Lionel Messi met it with a clean first time finish. It was his fourteenth goal of the season, and it briefly lifted hopes inside the stadium.
Miami pushed hard for the second goal in the closing stages. Toronto FC however, held their nerve under pressure. Defender Ian Fray made a crucial goal line clearance in the eighty-first minute.
A Costly Fall for Inter Miami
This defeat continues a difficult stretch for Inter Miami. The team has now lost four of its last five matches in all competitions. Just a week earlier, they suffered a heavy defeat away at Nashville. That result allowed Nashville to open a ten-point gap at the top of the standings.
Head coach Guillermo Hoyos did not hide his frustration afterwards. He admitted the club is currently struggling to find consistent results. According to him, the responsibility for turning things around rests with him and his staff. He promised the team would keep working to end the rough patch quickly.
A Rare Win for Toronto
For Toronto FC, this victory carries real significance. It was only their second road win in ten away matches this season. If we look more closely we would know that this win broke a long losing streak. Toronto had never won in seven previous trips to face Inter Miami.
The result also extends a revival for the Canadian club. Toronto has now gone unbeaten in four of their last matches. For Inter Miami, the message is urgent. Despite Messi’s amazing performance, the defending champions must fix their form fast, or they could loose their spot on the top playoff.
