Pakistan Links Reopening of Afghan Border to Firm Anti-Terror Assurances

Pakistan has reiterated its stance and made it clear once again that the border will remain closed until the Afghan government gives a firm assurance to prevent terrorists from infiltrating Pakistan.

In a weekly press briefing, Foreign Office Spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi said that the problem is not just TTP or TTA, Afghan citizens have also been involved in serious crimes in Pakistan, the context of the border closure should be understood in this reality.

The Foreign Office Spokesperson said that Pakistan has no differences with the people of Afghanistan, they are our brothers and sisters, the border closure is for security reasons.

He said that Pakistan has always been positive in providing aid to the Afghan people, the border policy is related to practical cooperation to eliminate terrorism from Afghan soil in Pakistan, the Afghan government should assure that terrorists and violent elements will not enter Pakistan, until Afghanistan gives a firm assurance, the Pak-Afghan border will remain closed.

In response to a question, the Foreign Office spokesperson said that he was aware of media reports regarding Pak-Afghan talks in Saudi Arabia.

Tahir Hassan Andrabi said that the Turkish President had announced two weeks ago that a high-level Turkish delegation would come to Islamabad. The reason for the Turkish delegation not coming could be scheduling or lack of cooperation from the Taliban. We have closed the border with Afghanistan for our own safety. We do not want our citizens to be targets of terrorism.

The Foreign Office spokesperson said that President Putin’s visit to India is a mutual matter between the two sovereign countries. Pakistan does not have a specific position on possible defense agreements between India and Russia. The states are independent in expanding their bilateral relations.

He said that the Indian government is concerned about the discriminatory policies against Muslims, state patronage has emboldened extremist organizations, tomorrow is the 33rd anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition, this incident is still a cause of concern and sorrow, transparent accountability is necessary for every act of harming Muslim religious symbols and historical heritage, desecration of any holy place is a violation of the principles of religious equality.
