Prof. Dr. Waheed further emphasized that if the necessary funds are not released, the department will not be responsible for any patient’s complaint as a result of the suspension.
Mayo Hospital halts cardiac care amid financial crises. The health care crisis in Punjab, Pakistan has worsened as Mayo Hospital, the largest public health facility in Lahore, has stopped all cardiac services due to severe financial and administrative problems.
The hospital’s cardiology department has suspended both emergency and elective cardiac procedures, citing acute shortage of life-saving drugs and essential surgical supplies. This stop is after the funds necessary for these operations have completely stopped.
In a letter to the Mayo Hospital CEO, Professor Dr. Imran Waheed, head of the Department of Cardiology, said, “The Department of Cardiology will not be able to perform any emergency or elective procedures due to the closure of all disposables. The administration and hospital director Angiographies and Percutaneous Coronary Interventions (PCIs) are required after finance has withheld all necessary funds.
The letter emphasized that the suspension of all cardiac services, including emergency primary PCIs, will remain in effect until financial resources are provided for disposables.
Prof. Dr. Waheed further emphasized that if the necessary funds are not released, the department will not be responsible for any patient’s complaint as a result of the suspension. He urged the administration to resolve the issue immediately, stressing that the responsibility for the patients’ suffering now lies with the hospital management.
The suspension is a major blow to Punjab’s already strained public health system, which has left thousands of heart patients languishing as they await resolution of the financial crisis at Mayo Hospital.
