The annual commemoration on May 28 marks Pakistan’s emergence as the world’s seventh nuclear power and the first Islamic state equipped with nuclear weapons.
On this day in 1998, Pakistan conducted nuclear tests in the Rasko Hills of Chaghi district, Balochistan, in response to India’s five nuclear explosions, affirming its commitment to national security. These tests signaled to the world that while Pakistan is a peace-loving country, it remains vigilant and ready to defend itself against any threat.
The journey to nuclear capability began under Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, whose vision of an invincible national defense was realized when Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif defied international pressure to conduct the tests.
