Baloch reiterated Pakistan’s condemnation of Israeli forces’ massacre of unarmed Palestinians in Gaza.
In response to the US suggestion to probe discrepancies in the February 8 general elections, Pakistan has firmly rejected external interference in its internal affairs, asserting its sovereign right to make decisions independently.
During her weekly press address, Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to addressing internal matters autonomously, stating, “No country can give directions to Pakistan, an independent and sovereign nation.”
The remarks came in response to comments made by US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller, who urged Pakistan to investigate reported irregularities in the elections transparently and according to its laws and procedures.
The Feb 8 general elections in Pakistan were marred by allegations of widespread rigging, leading to a hung Parliament. Independent candidates supported by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) won over 90 seats in the 266-member National Assembly.
In a joint letter to US President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, a group of influential lawmakers, including Muslim legislators from the ruling Democratic Party, called for withholding recognition of a new government in Pakistan until a thorough and credible investigation into election interference is conducted.
In response to questions about the letter, Baloch stated that it was a communication between US public officials and not addressed to the government of Pakistan, hence no official comments were offered on such letters.
Furthermore, Baloch reiterated Pakistan’s condemnation of Israeli forces’ massacre of unarmed Palestinians in Gaza, emphasizing the need for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian aid access.
