Election Commission summons Nawaz Sharif in rigging case. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has summoned former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a rigging case pertaining to his victory from NA-130 constituency. The summons came in response to a petition filed by Yasmin Rashid, the lawyer representing a PTI-backed independent candidate from NA-130 Lahore.
According to Yasmin Rashid, the incident in question occurred late at night while the Returning Officer (RO) was compiling Form 47. She alleged that policemen entered the RO’s office during this process, raising concerns about the integrity of the election results.
The lawyer argued that according to Form 45, Yasmin Rashid was leading by a margin of 20,000 votes. However, she claimed that heavy rigging took place, resulting in an unexpected surge of 101,000 votes in favor of Nawaz Sharif from 33 polling stations.
The Election Commission of Pakistan has adjourned the hearing of the case until February 27, indicating the seriousness with which it is approaching the matter. This development underscores the ECP’s commitment to ensuring transparency and fairness in the electoral process, as well as its willingness to address allegations of rigging and electoral malpractice.
