In the second over of the chase, Shafali Verma popped a simple return catch straight back to Fatima Sana. It should have been a routine dismissal. Instead, Fatima Sana turned the moment into something bigger. She gestured firmly toward the pavilion, giving Shafali Verma an unmistakable send-off as she walked back.
Cameras caught the whole exchange, and clips of the moment spread across social media within minutes. Given that Pakistan’s own innings had just collapsed so badly, the optics did not sit well with everyone watching. The ICC’s Decision and Official Charges
On-field umpires Nimali Perera and Shathira Jakir Jesy, along with third umpire Rokeya Sultana and fourth umpire Rabab Ahsan, all raised concerns about the gesture. The case was then handed to match referee Supriya Rani Das for a formal review.
Fatima Sana was charged under Article 2.5 of the ICC’s Code of Conduct, a rule covering “using language, actions or gestures which disparage, or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter” following a dismissal. Rather than contesting the charge, Fatima Sana admitted to the offence directly in her meeting with the match referee, which meant no formal hearing was needed.
Fatima Sana received a fine of 10 percent of her match fee, along with one demerit point added to her disciplinary record. Under ICC rules, Level 1 offences can carry penalties ranging anywhere from a simple reprimand up to a fine of 50 percent of match fee, so this landed on the lighter end of that scale.
Why This Moment Carries Extra Weight
Pakistan’s batting collapse against India was not just disappointing, it was historic for all the wrong reasons. Getting bowled out for 55 remains one of the lowest totals ever recorded by the team in T20I cricket. India completed the chase inside just nine overs, sealing a comprehensive seven-wicket win without much difficulty at all.
Given that backdrop, many felt Fatima Sana’s celebration looked mismatched with her team’s overall performance that day. To her credit, she still finished the match with three wickets, arguably one of Pakistan’s few bright spots on a miserable afternoon. But a strong bowling display could not shield her from the criticism that followed the send-off.
Under ICC regulations, accumulating four or more demerit points within 24 months converts into suspension points, and two suspension points can mean a ban from a Test match or two limited-overs internationals, whichever comes first for the player involved.
