The official price of chicken meat in Lahore has been fixed at Rs591 per kilogram after a reduction of Rs4, but shopkeepers are charging much higher rates. In Rawalpindi, live chicken is being sold for Rs412 per kilogram while clean meat has reached Rs680 per kilogram, causing inflation to the citizens.
Shopkeepers have attributed the price hike to the wedding season, while the common man has reduced his purchase of meat due to its high cost.
Tariq Javed, president of Lahore’s Tollington Market, justified the price hike by citing increased operational costs. Traders have blamed poultry farms for the high prices, saying that limited supply has forced them to sell at higher rates.
“When supplies are scarce, we buy them at high prices and we have no choice but to sell at a markup,” explained trader Aqib Khan.
The cold weather has played a major role in the rising demand for chicken, especially for soups, tikkas and other seasonal dishes, further widening the gap between supply and demand. Citizens expressed frustration over the rising costs, with some appealing to the government to intervene.
“Chicken has become a luxury for the poor. It should cost around Rs 400-500 per kg so that everyone can afford it,” said a local resident.
