Khan needed a simple majority of votes cast, as the rules for the mayoral race were changed to a first past-the-post voting system before the most recent election.
LONDON: British-Pakistani-born Sadiq Khan has won a record third term as mayor of London as the election results went in favor of the Labour Party, here on Saturday.
As per the media reports, the final results for the London mayoral constituency of Lambeth and Southwark showed a formal victory for Khan as he received 106,861 votes compared to the Conservatives’ Susan Hall, who received 26,347 votes.
Sir Keir Starmer’s party continued to make gains after Khan’s landslide victory over his nearest rival, dominated by criticism of his decision to expand London’s ultra-low-emissions zone.
Keir had indicated he was confident of a Khan victory before the announcements began, as he counted mayoral victories for his party in Liverpool, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, and Greater Manchester, where Andy Burnham returned to power.
In a fresh challenge to the prime minister to call an election, Sir Kerr said: “Fourteen more years, I’m sorry, I don’t care what political party you support, if you’re going to make your country worse off. Quit when you find it. After 14 years, you are not fit to be in government for another moment.
